ASST 10: Functional Equivalency in Vision
Goal: draw connections between scientific research and empirical evidence
Describe evidence from at least one PRIMARY SOURCE JOURNAL ARTICLE suggesting the presence or absence for the functional equivalency of imaginal (imagery-based) processing and perceptual (“real-input”-based) processing.  The evidence should speak to whether or not visualization and imagery use similar brain-based processing. This report should be 250-350 words.  It should include at least one quote (e.g., a definition or clarification of a concept) from an original source article (e.g., see work by Shepard, Kosslyn, or Georgopolis).  I am particularly interested in your demonstrating insight into the connection between data and theory and some of the thinking behind theoretical proposals that describe human information processing. I do anticipate that there will be parts of the original source article(s) than you will not fully understand. I am more interested in your level of understanding than the use of technical jargon.
you MUST draw connections between your submitted work and the content from the text.  It is ok to track down an original source article cited in the text and see how the text streamlined or re-interpreted the original report.
NOTE: the term functional equivalency is ALSO used in philosophy, chemistry, and other applications… here we are interested in the PSYCHOLOGY USE (e.g., as it pertains to imagery and visual processing).
in PSYCINFO you might use any one of the following sets of search terms: (also restrict to peer review and full text available)
FUNCTIONAL EQUIVALENCY
VISUALIZATION + MENTAL IMAGERY + PERCEPTION
functional equivalence theory
mental imagery + vision
Assignment #11 (LANGUAGE):
GOAL: To have you demonstrate your grasp of the importance of cognitive psychology in the study of language.
REQUIREMENT: Based on one or more PRIMARY SOURCE RESEARCH ARTICLE(S) that you locate via PSYCINFO, Discuss some aspect of how cognitive psychologists have endeavored to understand how humans use and/or learn language (250-350 words).
for more accessible ideas you may want to restrict your search to the journal ‘current directions in psychological science’
possible ideas:
– There is a lot of excellent and readable work on BILINGUALISM
– find an article investigating the LINGUISTIC RELATIVITY hypothesis (how the habitual patterns induced by the language of the person might influence how a person thinks).
– find a psychology article examining how humans perform bridging inferences (Anaphora, p.262)
– find an article examining the role of homophones (e.g, the suppression of the ‘non-current’ interpretation, p. 264)
This essay will NOT be based on your opinions. It is to be based solely on RESEARCH FINDINGS as reported in peer-reviewed PSYCHOLOGY journal articles. As such, be sure to include a summary of what one or more articles suggests regarding this issue. You MUST use the SJSU electronic database “psycinfo” or “psycARTICLES” to aid your search and you must include one or more complete (preferably APA-style) citations to content-appropriate academic journal articles from peer-reviewed journals. It is ok to check your potential articles with me in the days before the assignment is due for either clarification about meaning or to ensure that they are sufficiently scientifically rigorous.
Part 1: Essay (250-350 words)
Assignment #12: PROBLEM SOLVING
GOAL: To have you demonstrate your grasp of the nature of problem solving.
REQUIREMENT: Write a short essay format report that describes a problem that you have personally encountered and resolved, and how you addressed the problem.  You MUST use at least three technical terms of concepts (type them in boldface) from the GOLDSTEIN text (and/or lecture notes) pertaining to chapter 12 on the topic of problem solving.

Assignment #13 (Biases in Reasoning and Decision Making): 3% of your final grade
GOAL: To have you demonstrate your grasp three different cognitive biases in decision-making. One of these must be the “Anchoring and Adjustment” heuristic (also knows as the anchoring effectLinks to an external site.); another must relate to the work of Kahneman. The remaining one is any cognitive biases in decision-making not already included in your write-up that was discussed in class or which is mentioned in the text (group think, framing, etc.).
REQUIREMENT: Write a report discussing the heuristics that have influenced three separate decisions that you have personally made.
Consider this three mini-assignments.  Provide a brief description of each of three scenarios in which you had to make a decision (or were involved in the decision making) and the cognitive biases that may have been involved (possibly in retrospect). Each of the three sections of this assignment will include a clear definition of the heuristic(s), the description of the situation, and statements that indicate why each heuristic applies to the situation as you have described it. It is possible (but not required) that multiple heuristics may have influenced each decision; you may note this, but you must describe three separate decision-making episodes.
– One of the episodes must use the “anchoring and adjustment” heuristic (e.g. see: http://psychology.iresearchnet.com/social-psychology/social-cognition/anchoring-and-adjustment-heuristic/Links to an external site. )
– Another episode must use a different bias or heuristic, but one that has been discussed or presented by Kahneman.
– The third heuristic (again, a different heuristic than the first two) is up to you.
Each of the three episodes will involve
(a) the story (your experience)
(b) the name and definition of the heuristic, and
(c) explain why the heuristic applies to the particular story you presented.
