Assignment 1 – 10% of total grade: Due June 30
Identification of a planning problem. This is a two-paragraph (300-500 words) proposal 
of a planning problem students would like to investigate over the course of the semester. Crucial for this step is the identification of the scope, stakes, and framing of the problem.
Assignment 2 – 25%: Due July 14
Observation of a planning problem: This is a four-page (1000-1200 words) paper examining students’ identified problem through in-person observations. Observations should be 
documented through notes, sketches, photographs, maps, or other multimedia forms. The paper will them interpret these observational materials using course lectures and texts. 
Students are welcome, but not required, to use outside sources. 
Assignment 3 – 25%: Due August 4
Emergent critique of a planning problem: This is a four-page (1000-1200 words) paper extending students’ investigation of the planning problem through both reflections and 
considerations of potential action. Why is this problem a critical problem? What do 
popular sources include or not include? Is this problem more or less complex in the 
literature than on the ground? Does the problem, as you observe it, match how it is 
represented in our readings and lectures? What has been done about it? What can be done about it? Your final submission should include parts two and three of the assignment.
